XVIII Commonwealth Games Melbourne 2006 DOUBLE GOLD FOR SCOTLAND!
Less than an hour after McClatchey’s winning performance, David Carry scooped
a second gold of the day for Scotland with a brilliant win in the 400m
Freestyle. He took the race in a new Scottish Record of 3:48.17 ahead of
Canadian Andrew Herd (3.49.08) and Welshman David Davies (3:49.44). City
of Aberdeen swimmer Robbie Renwick also swam in the final finishing in 7th
position (3:54.04). In other finals Hannah Miley finished in 7th position in the Womens 200m Individual Medley in 2:17.83 behind the first 1-2-3 for the Australian team for swimmers Stephanie Rice, Brooke Hanson & Lara Carroll. Unfortunately Stephanie Hill, Fiona Booth & Kerry Buchan didn't progress through to the finals of their 50m events however have more events during the week in which they will more chances!
The final race of the night was the eagerly anticipated
Men’s 4x100m Freestyle which once again had the teams
from South Africa and Australia battling it out for top
honours. It was the South African’s who took Gold in a
new Games Record time of 3:14.97. Canada finished
behind Australia to take the Bronze. The team from
Scotland consisting of Craig Houston, Todd Cooper,
Robbie Renwick and David Carry finished 5th
(behind England) in a new Scottish Record time of
3:21.65.
DAY ONE - Scottish Swimmers : 4 Qualify for Finals & 3 Qualify for Semi-Finals! Loughborough swimmer Caitlin McClatchey started off the Games well for Scotland with a win in the heats of the Womens 200m Freestyle in a new Scottish Record time of 1:59.96! Local swimmers David Carry, Robbie Renwick & Hannah Miley also progressed to their respective finals. David & Robbie swam in the Mens 400m Freestyle, in times of 3:51.66 & 3:52.69 to qualify in 3rd & 6th positions to the final tomorrow morning. Hannah raced in the 200m Individual Medley to qualify in 7th position for the final (2:18.47), team mate Lorna Smith just missing out finishing in 10th (2:23.80). South Aberdeenshire swimmer Kerry Buchan has qualified in 16th position (35.43) for the semi-final of the Womens 50m Breaststroke alongside Warrender swimmer Fiona Booth who qualified in 9th (32.82). Nova Centurion swimmer Stephanie Hill also qualified for the semi-final of the Womens 50m Butterfly event in 16th place (28.28). |
