Commonwealth Youth Games, Bendigo 2004

The final day proved to be the most fierce in terms of competition for the South Aberdeenshire girls. Scotland claimed 2nd on the Swimming Medal Table with 7 GOLD, 10 SILVER and 13 BRONZE!  Following disappointment in the Womens 50m Breaststroke on day two, Kerry Buchan put all her cards on the table and came up trumps when winning the Womens 100m Breaststroke, in a new best time of 1:11.85! Well done Kerry!   Gemma Sutherland also raced well to finish behind Scottish team-mate Lorna Smith in the Womens 200m Individual Medley and picked up the Bronze medal in a new best time of 2:21.61. However not content with just that she went on to pick up her 5th Bronze medal of the meet in the Womens 50m Backstroke also in a new best time of 30.92! Kerry & Gemma were also part of the 4th placed 4x200m Freestyle relay who just missed out on Bronze by .32!  Hannah Miley raced an excellent 200m Butterfly, her most favoured event, and won the Bronze medal in a stunning time of 2:19.47.

On Day Two of the Commonwealth Youth Games, Scotland again impressed when picking up a total of 1 GOLD, 3 SILVER, 3 BRONZE, 9 Finalist placings and a Scottish Junior Record!  South Aberdeenshire swimmers Gemma Sutherland and Kerry Buchan contributed to the winning of two of the Bronze medals, Gemma closely followed team-mate Lorna Smith in the 200m Backstroke with a bronze medal winning time of 2:19.45. Kerry was part of the Womens 4x100m Medley Relay in which she posted an awesome time of 1:11.98 for the Breaststroke leg.  Hannah Miley competed in the final of the 100m Butterfly where she came 7th in a time of 1:04.75. Scottish team-mate Louise Pate (Hearts) just missed out on the medals in 5th, but gained a New Scottish Junior Record in a time of 1:04.33!

 

Day One provided some top quality swimming with SAS swimmers bringing home 2 SILVERS and 2 BRONZE medals! Hannah Miley began the winning run with a Silver medal in the 400m Individual Medley in a time of 4:59.18. Gemma Sutherland was next up in the Womens 100m Backstroke where she picked up a Bronze medal in a time of 1:05.48. Kerry Buchan competed in an extremely close 200m Breaststroke final where the first four places were separated by .45! Kerry came through to win the Silver medal in a time of 2:35.14. Gemma & Hannah also swam as part of the Bronze medal winning Scottish 4x100m Freestyle relay where they posted times of 60.16 and 60.73 respectively.  Bring on tomorrow where Hannah & Gemma will be in the 100 Freestyle, Gemma will race in her favourite event; 200m Backstroke, Kerry will compete in the 50m Breaststroke and Hannah in the 100m Butterfly!!

Congratulations to South Aberdeenshire swimmers Kerry Buchan, Hannah Miley and Gemma Sutherland, who have qualified as part of the Scottish Commonwealth Youth Team who will compete in Bendigo, AUSTRALIA in December this year!!! Best of luck to the girls and we look forward to hearing of the results.
